Policy and media
Briefed a delegation of parliamentarians from Western Australia on recent changes to the English child protection system to assist their enquiries into innovative models of practice.

Provided written and oral input to journalists undertaking a groundbreaking investigation into the child protection system to ensure the series was rooted in evidence and frontline experience.

Created a straightforward, digestible introductory guide to the 1989 Children Act and its historical background for media and policy professionals.

Trained a group of young people on the 1989 Children Act to enable them to lead a parliamentary celebration of its 30th anniversary.
Training and development
Provided interim management, training, and assessment to five social work students to enable them to reach qualification.

Overhauled the programme of monthly training sessions for 40 local authority social work staff to improve their knowledge of the law and practice skills.

Devised and presented a series of webinars on safeguarding for teachers and senior school leaders for the National College. Topics included recognising and responding to criminal exploitation; statutory duties to looked after children; and understanding new multi-agency safeguarding arrangements.
Innovation and practice improvement
Redesigned the support plans used by a child protection service so that they were based around achievable and measurable outcomes through facilitating an action learning set with practitioners.

Completed assessments of parenting in particularly challenging cases, especially those involving recurrent care proceedings, where alcohol and drug dependence, mental capacity, and domestic abuse were intersecting factors.

Directed and conducted investigations involving issues of significant complexity, including where non-accidental injury, international law and child abduction were issues.

Wrote, and recently updated, a 10,000 word guide for social workers on a particularly demanding area of practice, published by Community Care Inform.
Expertise and guidance
Provided expert input to Oliver Wyman on the relationship between social mobility and the child welfare system in their research for the Mayor’s Fund for London.

Briefed a group of academics embarking on a new research programme on the fundamentals of the English child welfare system.

Redrafted elements of the government’s Covid-19 guidance for children’s social care to better reflect the needs of vulnerable children.
